Severance Family Takes Greenville, SC by Storm

LTP would like to congratulate the Severance family, Sydney, Saige, and Sawyer for traveling to Greenville, SC to participate in the Western and Southern life Junior State Open. Also, congratulations to LTP’s newest member, Logan Voeks who also participated in the tournament.

At the age of 6, Sawyer won the B10 doubles with his partner Davis Phillips and went on to finish 3rd overall in the B10 singles.

Saige lost in the finals to Sophie Young who is three years older. This is a remarkable result considering seven year old Saige is competing against children two and three years older than her.

Sydney made it to the G10’s semifinals of the consolation back draw before falling in a close match to Logan Voeks. Logan then went on to win the back draw of the G10’s singles by beating Mary Cage Carter in a close two set match.  Logan has just started taking clinics at LTP and we are so happy to have such a nice family join LTP. LTP will do everything it can to take Logan’s game to new heights.

LTP members compete in local tennis tournament with great success.

This past weekend, LTP members, Saige Severance, Sydney Severance, Sawyer Severance, Sutton Severance, Camryn Deames, Mitchell Deames and Emily Elliott had a tremendous showing at the St. Andrew’s Spring Junior Challenger.

Camryn Deames played up in the G16’s and won the tournament in convincing fashion. Without dropping a set,  Camryn, 13 yrs old, dominated the older girls.

Emily Elliot lost in the finals of the G12’s. She fought hard and lost to the first seed, Mary Grace Armistead.

The Severance family has taken the junior tournament scene on with a vengeance. At ages 5,6,7,and 8, Sutton, Sawyer, Saige and Sydney are playing two tournaments a week and practicing at LTP three to four days a week.

Sawyer placed 3rd in the B10’s and with four years left in the B10’s division, expect Sawyer to rack up hundreds of trophies. Sydney who is only 8 years old won the G10’s by only dropping three games the entire tournament.

LTP would like to give the Severance family a big shout out and offer this one tip of advice,” Add another room onto your house because in the next ten years or so, all the trophies will not fit in their bedrooms!”

18 LTP members compete in junior tournament this past weekend

This past weekend, eighteen LTP members Lillian Conant, Penelope Hayes, Andrew Dacosta, Camryn Deames, Brant Fenno, Penelope Hayes, Emma Navarro, Meggie Navarro, Gianna Pielet, Lauren Quinn, Saige Severance, Sydney Severance, Sawyer Severance,  Morgan Mitchell, Ann Martin Skelly traveled to Columbia, SC and represented LTP in a level 3 southern tournament. Staying in town competing in the Low Country Challenger was Mitchell Deames, Rebecca Spratt and Anna Golding.

LTP brought home two first place trophies. Emma Navarro won the girl’s 14s division and Gianna Pielet won the girls’ 12s division.

As a junior coach for over 23 years, I am asked if players should stop playing tournaments to work on their game or if after a poor result, should players take a break from tournaments. The answer is simple! I believe that tournaments are essential to a player’s development and should never be missed unless a player is injured or tired! Each player is different and rest is just as important as practice. Poor results are part of player development and a child must learn to “get back on the horse” immediately after a tough loss. Players should constantly work on their games but without tournaments to apply those new skills, the student has really not learned anything. Tournaments are the best practice!

LTP members travel to Myrtle Beach and Augusta, Ga to bring back exceptional results.

This past weekend, LTP members Lillian Conant, Penelope Hayes, Morgan Mitchell and Ann Martin Skelly traveled to Augusta, Ga and represented LTP in a level 3 southern tournament. Lillian lost in the finals to Grace Staes who took down top seeded Ann Martin in the first round. Ann Martin went onto win the back draw convincingly. While the fore mentioned players were in Georgia, the following players went to Myrtle Beach to compete: Anna Golding, Saige Severance, and Sawyer Severance. Congratulations to 7 year old Saige who played in her first 12 and under tournament and made it to the semis. A big shout out goes to 6 yr old Sawyer who won the boys 10s. This is Sawyers second tournament win in the last month.

Back in February, Emma Navarro competed in the second largest tournament in the country and made it to the finals before being rained out. We just received word that Emma won the sportsmanship award for her outstanding demeanor, attitude and the way she respects her opponents and referees. At LTP, we emphasis sportsmanship above everything else! This is one of the most important life lessons that will carry our juniors throughout their lives!
